I'm doing pretty well, thanks for asking. I don't care much about the Mets, since I'm indifferent to baseball (though I did go to my first ever MLB game two weeks ago and had fun). I also didn't know that they were an ironic pathway to metaness.

And in early June I'm moving to Burkina Faso for two years with the Peace Corps. So there's that.

Oh, and I am also a fan of the Cubs, which as we know is not baseball per se but is at least some baseball-like endeavor, so the Mets, they can bite me. But not that ratbastard who wants to sell the rights to rename Wrigley Field. He can go suck Steve Bartman's cock in hell.

I'm doing OK, considering that it's the end of finals week and I'm just emerging from that annoying laryngitis-cough thing I complained about on the "what minor illness pisses you off?" thread, but I had a much milder case than nearly everyone else in the county. I've got a mess of essays left to grade, and the panic-inducing prospect of having to finish all the prep for a brand-new class within a week or so is making me hyperventilate occasionally. But hey, it's often above freezing during the morning dogwalks now, and the birdies are singing, so I can dig it.

WAIT. THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO POST YET.

Anyway.

As I was saying. I'm alright. The good is that I landed a fairly decent government summer desk job and am starting to write again, the bad is that I lost my scholarship and have once more begun to overanalyze my relationship. Bad Phire.

I've also called up my phone service provider and cancelled my contract, swallowing the exorbitant cancellation fee in favour of the ridiculously low monthly payment I'd get from pay as you go. The reason I took the fall? When I transferred the account from my dad's name to my name (as I was moving out), they renewed my contract. Without telling me. When I called in to demand to see proof of assent, they told me it was automatic, nothing they could do, blah blah blah. Assholes.

And I've realized recently that I inadvertently locked myself into one of those contract that claim to protect you from rising energy rates, but really overcharge you grossly. I don't seem to be having much luck with the real world thing, must be more careful in the future.

But on the upside, I've gotten into Torchwood, and Jack Harkness is love.

Well, Josh, these days, what I thought was common knowledge is no longer common. And folks actually answered. So I was just feeling embarrassed for them and letting them know, well, you know. Funny thing, it actually morphed into the topic of conversation...

And yes, *GLORIOUS*! If you're a fracking pice of *MOLD*! Just kidding - I love P-town and everything about it. And I have the rusty bicycle in the parking garage to show it!

The fun thing is that if you already know that everybody knows (and knows you know) that "how about them Mets" is a cliched awkward-filler-question, you can then ironically pose it as an earnest query (and folks can then vamp thereon) secure in the knowledge that the meta is thick in the room.

We’ve had a long, wet winter and spring

You forgot "glorious" in there. Happiness about Portland weather is a zero sum game; I'm just bracing myself for too little rain and too much sun.

Just dandy.

And, Josh, I am glad to see you expanding those horizons. The great thing about Beavers games is, well, it's baseball. If you can stand watching paint dry, you can hack watching baseball. I think the draw is that it is a thinking person's sport (hence the bait on your hook). Let me know when you're going - I always make 2 or 3 just because, as you know, I just love watching live sports, in general. The rationale is that it is a one-off original. Every time.

But, I am feeling a little awkward, because, everybody should know that the question about the Mets, as posed, is one of those questions used to deflate an awkward pregnant pause in dialogue.

Otherwise, I am very happy about the prospect of 90 degrees next week here un Stumptown. We've had a long, wet winter and spring, so I am more than ready to bake some of that moss off my bean and catch some overdue rays.

The weekend is coming, as is mother's day. And if you drop by your local Burgerville on Sunday, you can get mom a rose and a strawberry shortcake for free. No purchase necessary. (I work in insurance, so it's not a plug)

I can't complain. I'm starting at a great MA program in the fall, and double dipping, with 1099 ghostwriting the great Mormon conspiracy novel, and unemployment until then. In a week I go to on a Caribbean cruise! I have a cute little house in a killer neighborhood in Sunny SoCal with my boyfriend and our mutual friend, the guy who hooked us up. So those things outweigh the bad. Also my cats are fluffy and cute.

The bad? During my move here, I got in a $3500 fender bender while driving my father-not-in-law's truck. Then, my car broke down in the middle of nowhere (this biodiesel golf is a money pit), and I piled up more debt dealing with that. Then, I was in another borrowed truck when I was pulled over, yelled at, unlawfully searched and made to bawl by a very nasty young female cop, who impounded the truck for being more than 6 months unregistered. I felt bad, my folks felt bad. Bad feelings had by all. Then I threw a housewarming party and got a call that my grandpa died. Then two people at the party put me in a situation that necessitated my breaking off ties with them, which is unspeakably hard for me to do, but they basically tried to burn my freak flag, and well, things won't be working out with those fuckers.

But happy plans make for happy days. Tonight I'm going to see the high school play for no bloody reason, and on Sunday, it's Brunch 'n' Bowl with the family.

My housemate watched the Mets play two games down in LA: They're doing OK!!

Huh. I don’t know! I stay logged-in without issue, but I’ve heard scattered reports of other folks having the same thing happen. Cookies? Something?

I don't know if it's an every day thing, or if it happens each time I restart the browser, or what. But I *always* have to log in. Unlike Metafilter, where, as far as I can tell, I've never been logged out. Even when I haven't used the computer in a while.

It's all a mystery to me. Sessions and cookies are something I still haven't gotten into on the web dev front. :)

I love baseball, and being a Cubs fan, I have an unfavorable view of the Mets.

Other than that, I'm leaving for Hawaii tomorrow. Yay!

Hiya, bondcliff! Congrats on the house.

Condolences, Kat. And likewise but differently, grumblebee.

Of the Mets, et al:

Despite not really caring about it either in general, I've actually lately been taking a bit of a shine to baseball, or at least to baseball metacommentary. I check Fire Joe Morgan a couple times a day now, and I feel worse than usual about neglecting Bunt Cake.

I think what it is that I enjoy a good argument for the merits/demerits of a thing, and it seems like all else about the sport aside, I turn out to know or know of a fair number of smart baseball fans who have a knack for turning their talk to the game. I'm going to try to get out and see a few of the local minor-league teams home games this season, see if I'm growing a taste for actually watching it along with my newfound interesting in reading about it.

I’m doing well. Stressed out, but mostly with things I’ve brought on myself. About 2 ½ years ago I posted a the home hacks question to AskMe, trying to build a wish list for a new home my wife and I had just begun designing. Two weeks from today, all going well, I’ll be moving into that very home. I can’t really call it The Home That AskMe Built, since in the end very little from the thread made it into the home due mostly to practical (read: money) reasons, but that thread certainly have us a lot to think about during the design process. The stress comes from the fact that there is still quite a bit to do before we can live there. A toilet would be nice, for instance.

This is my first post on the BBQ. I like what you’ve done here, Mr. Millard.

I'm doing well. The last couple of weeks have been rough, though. My grandmother died after an accident and I flew to Iceland to attend the funeral. In other ways I'm doing well. I am now printing out a stack of manuscripts of a novel I just finished the second draft of. I'll give copies to a few readers here in Iceland (it's in Icelandic) and hope that most of them give me feedback and that it'll be something I can build on.

I'm a foreigner, even though I live in Red Sox Country, I have an extremely limited range of opinions on baseball (from "meh" to "huh").

I'm not doing well. My Macbook Pro was stolen. That's bad, but it's not as bad as the fact that it had two chapters of a book I'm writing on it, and I hadn't backed them up. Which I know is my fault. So now I not only feel stolen-from; I feel stupid.

Worst of all, the theft happened in my office. So now I have to deal with the violated feeling that either (a) someone snuck in our building and took it or, worse, (b) one of my fellow employees took it. This is a small company, we're all pretty close, so that second possibility is particularly stomach churning. We have an open office with no doors. So now I don't know what to do with my things. I know how quickly someone could stuff an iPod (or whatever) into his pocket if he wanted to, so I don't even know how to go to the bathroom without taking all my valuables in with me. I hate thinking about this all the time.

There's no way I can afford another machine right now, so until I can, I'll have to cart my work machine from home to work and back again each day.

But, as we Jews say, "I have my health!"

*cough* *cough*

Uh oh.

I am doing well, thank you. I would be doing better if I had a bottle of scotch on my desk, and some idea of what to do with the chapter I will soon be writing for the great MeFi novel. Perhaps I should ask that of the BBQ.

I have no opinion about the Mets, but then I dislike baseball.

For my part, I do not particularly strong feelings one way or the other regarding the Mets.
