To celebrate (and, well, apologize for) the fact that I’ll be out of town for a week on vacation and thus not updating the BBQ front page for a bit, here’s a sprawling thematic wish-fulfillment question:
What kind of vacation do you want? Where, when, why? What would you be doing, if anything? What would you be taking a vacation from?

I Wish I Was In Amsterdam (In The Nieuwmarkt)
I wish I was in Amsterdam, being there is who I am
Liberal Democracy, a doobie, the canals, and me
Hoist up a few tall cool ones, read the news and listen
To those holy fungi calling me home
And I can hear the band begin some strange trippy techno spin,
And by the whiskers on my chin, Amsterdam, I’ll be there
I wish I was in London, muesuem hopping and finding off the wall clubs.
Walking (safely) through India, seeing what I see, finding what I find, learning what I learn.
Japan. I want to go to Japan. That, and tour the pyramids in Egypt, but I might not tolerate the heat well.
I hear you are quite big there, IndigoRain.
Though I’ve never been to Europe and I am dying to go, right now I just want to do a road trip to Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. I feel like I could stare at coastline for the next 3 weeks straight.
- A road trip across North America
- Two months in the UK
- Two weeks in Egypt
- A week (two?) on a tropical island with white sugar beaches, hammocks, the clearest water on the planet and bottomless mojitos
I would like a vacation from sanity and self-awareness.
problem is I can’t handle the drugs like I used to.
I’d spend two weeks in Egypt with a shortwave radio, and I wouldn’t need to leave my room the entire time.
I was thinking about this today and realized that I don’t really want a vacation from my normal life so much as a change of scene and no work for a while. So I’d like to be magically transported (no plane, no car), along with all my dogs and cats and their accoutrements, to one of those nice rowhouses right across from Washington Square Park in the West Village for several days. We’d do our normal animule routine, but I’d also be able to pop out to Film Forum, Eva’s Veggie Cafe, Indian take-out, maybe a play or opera, etc.
Or if I could magically transport just myself to a really great, scenic, non-crowded, good swimming beach for a few hours, that’d be swell too.
I truly hate the hassle of taking a vacation, it always negates the whole “not being at work” thing. I would prefer to live somewhere close to a beach, so I could take leave from work and relax on the beach for a few days without actually *going* anywhere or specifically *doing* anything.
After thinking about this a little more, I think I could deal with the hassles of modern travel if I had something like 3 straight weeks off. Maybe rent a mansion in Cyprus or some shit where they don’t even have phones, but they have excellent weather and just hang out with the dog. No human contact. I could deal with that; there is enough time to unwind from the stress of travel *and* work, whereas on a typical (for me) vacation, I never forget about work, and the stress of travel is just more negativity on top of it.
