Sure, the US financial market is kind of collapsing, but let’s talk about more human debt. Who do you owe, and why? Did someone do you a solid? Is there any IOU in your life that you particularly value?

Nope. I’ve made it a practice to not ask for big favours. Sure, I could help friends move when they ask, but that’s about it.

Well…there was this one time with a hooker and a little too much cocaine in a Las Vegas hotel room………….
WELL, I have this sainted aunt who is giving me the young-adult aid my folks can’t: school money, car help, etc. She’s really amazing.
Then there’s my boyfriend who is also supporting me in every way.
My bffs who hold my hair in the symbolic and literal senses every time. Got a ride an hour away from one just this morning.
I mean, the list gets longer, the list gets shorter. I try to make sure I give back. I make lamps. I babysit. I bring over advil. I traffic in reliance, all around.
I owe a debt to a friend. He is not even a really really close friend but I know I will be there for him. My friend was on a soul-searching trip after a terrible break-up. He was dealing with his own shit. Yet despite that when I sent a one-line pretty down email, he took the time to write a page long reply encouraging me to soldier on. He doesn’t really know what an effect it had on me. It is in his nature to do such a thing and for that I owe him.
